Updates as you adjust
What it is
An emergency fund is money set aside for unexpected expenses or a loss of income. This calculator expresses a reserve goal as a number of months of essential expenses that you choose.
How to use
Enter essential monthly expenses, choose 3–12 months of coverage, then enter savings already set aside and a monthly contribution. The initial six months is an example. Change the inputs to compare scenarios.
What the result shows
The estimate shows the target, the amount still to save, how many months current savings cover, progress toward the target and whole contribution months to reach it. Expenses and contributions stay constant; no interest or investment return is included.

Fund target

$15,000.00

$15,000.00 is essential monthly expenses multiplied by 6 months of chosen coverage. It is a scenario target, not a recommended amount.

Amount still to save
$10,000.00

$10,000.00 is the target minus current savings, with a minimum of zero. A zero gap means the entered savings meet this target.

Current coverage
2 months

Current savings cover 2 months of the entered essential expenses. This assumes expenses stay constant and no other income is used.

Months to reach goal
25

At $400.00 added each month, this scenario takes 25 whole months to close the gap, rounding up and excluding interest or withdrawals.

Progress toward target
33.33%

33.33% of the chosen target is covered by current savings. Progress is capped at 100%; a zero target is treated as complete.

Progress toward target · 33.33%
The bar shows 33.33% of the chosen target covered by current savings, capped at 100%. It does not represent future growth.

How this works

The target is monthly essential expenses multiplied by the coverage you choose. Six months is an illustrative starting value, not a recommendation; the form accepts 3–12 whole months. Amounts round to cents. Contributions stay constant and are added monthly. The estimate excludes interest, investment returns, inflation, taxes, fees and withdrawals. Progress stops at 100%. With zero expenses, the target is zero and coverage cannot be calculated. The sources provide background on emergency savings and deposit insurance; they do not prescribe this model or its default.
